Has Nachtstrom invented a new genre? Hm..... guess so.

Nachtstrom is an Austrian abnormality.  He's been making music for the past decade.  If any moniker was to fit this musician, it would have to be drone-ambient with a gallon of black paint thrown in for good measure.  The tracks on his latest CD-R release "Flush" are austere, chillingly frightening and always rely on the repetitive drone to fuel their forward motion.  Take his totally messed-up interpretation of Nico's "We've Got the Gold" or Syd Barrett's "Golden Hair".  One sounds more creepy then the next.   Is Nachtstrom trying to scare us or is he just a deranged individual? Don't get me wrong, this guy knows his music.  When he's playing incessant percussion on most of these tracks, he sounds like an obsessed madman.  I mean, who blends off-the-wall and over-the-top solo drumming in with morose, howling wind sounds or peculiar, hollow creepy sounds?  Maybe this is fucked-up music but certainly worth investigating.

Den Vogel schiesst indes "flush", die jüngste chmafu-CD von Nachtstrom, ab. Dichte atmosphaeren, gebaut aus viel elektronik, ziemlich viel schlagzeug und stellenweise gesang, entstehen hier aus verschiedenen aspekten. Einfach genial ist das schallplatten-design der CD, mit richtigen, abspielbaren rillen. Und selbst dort, wo nachtstrom ausleiht - namentlich bei Nico und Syd Barrett -, erweist er sich als stilsicher.

Dr. Nachtstrom aka Walter Brantner ist einer, der kaum was auslässt. Privat geht es uns nichts an, aber zumindest bruflich und musikalisch ist er aeusserst umtriebig. Moderatorentaetigkeit bei mehreren radiostationen, eine musikalische kooperation mit dem ex-Fetish-69-saenger Christian Fuchs unter dem namen Bunny Lake steht an, stilistisch scheisst er sich sowieso nichts. Und auf dem elektronischen experimentallabel nocords arbeitet er auch dementsprechend. Wilde noise-collagen, free-jazzelnde LSD ausfluege, dunkel-duesterer Deutsch-Pop und Post-Rock-allerlei. Nicht zu vergessen eine Nico-cover-version. Der mann hat's auch nicht leicht. Wer sich für waren dieser art interessiert: Dr. Nachtstrom ordiniert als moderator auf Radio Helsinki jeden Freitag von 20:30 - 22:30 unter dem titel "Hoerbar Abstrakt".

Dr. Nachtstrom firmiert nunmehr als Nachtstrom und ist seit zehn jahren für abgefahrene sounds gut. Auf "Flush" gibt's satt Drone-Ambient düsterer prägung. Dichte atmosphäre und wilde schlgzeugsolos, das hört sich gut an und vor allem die coverversionen (Nico, Syd Barrett) haben es in sich.

The Austrian formation Nachtstrom presents a nice atmospheric album. Flush, as it is entitled, features ten tracks, of which two covers, one from Nico and one from Syd Barrett, which fitt the concept perfectly. It's as if the calmer songs of The Young Gods have been combined with psychedelic instrumental ambient rock tracks moving between Ash and Pink Floyd. Great music when driving through lonely nights on empty highways.
